100th day of School

February 2nd we celebrated the 100th day of school. We have been learning poems and songs for our 100 day celebration. In class we made a 100 day flag, a necklace with 100 froot loops, and a 100 day collar. During our celebration we sang our songs and poems as we paraded to the cafeteria. We sang songs, read a book, and licked a tootsie pop 100 times. We learned that it takes a lot more than a 100 licks to get to the middle of a tootsie pop. To end our celebration we made the number 100 with 3cookies for our snack. We have been counting since the 1st day of school and can't believe we have been in kindergarten for 100 days already.70-80???? days more to go...:)

SNOW DAY

OH MY GOSH!!! We had such a blast the day it snowed in Houston. After lunch we got to go outside and play in the snow before we went home. We will never forget that day and talk about it ALL the time. How much FUN!!!!!

Visitors

In the 1st semester we had many visitors come to visit our Kindergarten classes. Buster the Bus came and talked to us about school bus safety rules. He was so cool! Firefighters also came to visit one day. They were so AWESOME. One of our 1st grade teachers got to dress up as a firefighter. They taught us about fire safety and the things we needed to do in case we were ever to have a fire. The fire truck they brought with them was so big and had so many things on it. At Thanksgiving, Tom the Turkey came to play. He was excited to see us at recess. Last but not least, Santa Claus came on the day of our Holiday Sing-a-long. He was checking to see if we were being naughty or nice. He said we all were very NICE!

Thanksgiving 2009

We had so much fun preparing for our Thanksgiving Feast and Program. In music class and in our classrooms we learned songs, poems and even a Thanksgiving Rebus story. On the day of our feast Mrs. Hill's and Mrs. Gonzalez's classes made our pumpkin pie treats and they were YUMMY!!!!! Mrs. Stone's and Mrs. Grizzell's classes peeled the potatoes for our mashed potatoes. We learned how to use a potato peeler, and it was hard work!!! At our feast we had turkey (donated by 5 of our AWESOME parents), corn, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberries, rolls, and pumpkin pie. It was DELICIOUS, and boy were we stuffed. All week we have talked about things that we are thankful for, and we ALL (students and teachers) agreed that we are definitely thankful for our FABULOUS MEADOW WOOD ELEMENTARY!!!

A "Magnet"riffic Day

To culminate our magnet unit we explored and experimented with all kinds of different magnets. We learned so many things. Mrs. Deal taught us that "the earth is the biggest magnet", and also taught us about compasses. We learned where North, South, East, and West were. Mrs. Clarkson used the ActivBoard to show us different things that were magnetic and things that were not. We also had some AWESOME parent volunteers...they helped us go fishing for magnetic objects, showed us how magnets repel and attract, and even helped us use magnets to guide paperclips through a maze. We had a BLAST. After each station we were just like real scientist and recorded our findings in our magnet journal.

Learning that our earth is the biggest magnet of all magnets was so neat!!! Also, learning how a compass works and using the globe was very interesting!

Each magnet has a north pole and south pole, and opposite poles attract, and same poles repel. We practiced this by using a pencil and putting 2 circle magnets on it. We made the magnets repel and attract..it was COOL!!

Kindergarten had fun fishing for magnetic objects...we found out that coins,rubber dinosaurs, straws, shells,and lots of other things are NOT magnetic, not even in the water. Paper clips, bolts, scissors, and other metal things ARE magnetic, even in the water. We fished for all kinds of things, and also got a little wet!!!:)

Playing with paperclips was fun. A magnetic wand was able to go through a paper plate and move paper clips through a maze. WOW!!!! We were able to move 5 and 6 paper clips at one time.

Storybook Parade

We had so much fun parading through the hallways of Meadow Wood. There were superheroes, cheerleaders, Harry Potter's, Fancy Nancy's and more in Kindergarten today! There was even a Halloween treat waiting for us in our classrooms when we finished our parade.

October 20th National Day of Writing

We celebrated by sharing our books that we have written with a buddy from another class. We also worked on our books that we have not finished. We love to write in kindergarten. We are consuming books written by Eric Carle. Next week, we will be critiquing his books and making a chart of things we notice in his books. Then we will get to produce our own version of a book using what we noticed about his books.

October 22nd and 23rd are Early Dismissal Days for Conferences, school will be dismissed at 12

October 29th - 8:30-2:00-Field Trip to Dewberry Farms
Please wear school t-shirt and put on sunscreen before coming to school, also please bring a sack lunch

October 30th -8:30 Storybook Parade
We will have refreshments for the students on the playground following the parade

October 30th- Fun with Magnets-- in the Math/Science Lab- during the school day
Students will participate in different magnet centers
